Set up the drive before the car starts moving
A useful test drive begins with a baseline. Make sure the drive is lawful and insured for your situation, set the seat and mirrors, turn the radio off, and note any warning lights or temperature information before moving.
Use the first parking manoeuvre to notice whether the car selects the direction or gear you asked for without an obviously serious delay, warning or loss of drive. Different transmissions behave differently, so the aim is to notice repeatable behaviour rather than force every car into one definition of “normal.”
Low-speed driving should reveal control problems early
At low speed, pay attention to steering consistency, braking control and obvious clunks or instability. You are not trying to diagnose the suspension or steering system from the driver’s seat; you are deciding whether the car feels safe enough to continue and which symptoms need a professional inspection.
On the road, look for repeatable patterns
Normal acceleration should make sense: the vehicle should build speed in a way that broadly matches what the engine or propulsion system is doing. Serious vibration, unstable braking, repeated harsh drivetrain behaviour, loss of drive or a new major warning is more important than a one-off sensation you cannot reproduce.
Use a suitable route that gives you a mix of low-speed manoeuvring, normal acceleration, braking, turns and steady driving. The point is to create useful information, not to prove the car is good.
Do not use one transmission checklist for every gearbox
A manual, conventional automatic, CVT and dual-clutch transmission can feel different by design. A diesel buyer may need to pay attention to usage history and emissions warnings; a hybrid/PHEV buyer should notice whether engine and electric operation transition cleanly enough to continue evaluating the car; an EV buyer should take propulsion, charging or thermal warnings seriously.

Finish the drive by looking for what changed
