Identity does not match
If the VIN or chassis number, registration details or other identifying records do not reconcile with the car in front of you, stop. Do not let a good test drive make an identity problem feel smaller.
The seller cannot clearly show the right to sell
Registration or keeper documents may not prove ownership in every market. If somebody is “selling it for a friend” or the authority to sell is vague, ask for evidence before continuing.
The mileage story does not make sense
Compare the odometer with inspection records, service invoices, history reports, previous adverts and visible wear. An unexplained mileage drop, impossible chronology or major mismatch deserves investigation before you trust the number on the dashboard.
The seller blocks normal verification
Being unable to see the car properly, start it cold when practical, take a lawful test drive, inspect documents or arrange an independent PPI can turn a normal uncertainty into a major buying risk.
A major warning or fluid problem is being dismissed
Persistent abnormal smoke, overheating, serious leaks, suspected fluid cross-contamination or major warning lights should not be reduced to “it just needs a sensor” without evidence.
The car feels unsafe
Dangerous tyre damage, unstable braking, severe steering problems, loss of drive, major clunks or other behaviour that prevents you from evaluating the car safely should end the test drive and move the issue to professional assessment.
Powertrain or driveline behaviour is severe and unexplained
Slipping or rev flare, delayed engagement, severe judder, grinding, repeated limp behaviour, propulsion warnings or loss of drive are observations that need diagnosis. Do not buy the diagnosis with the car.
The story keeps changing
The advert, documents, service history, seller answers and the car itself should broadly agree. Changing details, dodged questions and pressure to skip normal checks are reasons to slow down rather than speed up.
